Home Dialysis
Home Dialysis: More autonomy everyday
What is home dialysis?
Home dialysis is an alternative that allows patients to receive their treatment in a familiar environment, while maintaining their independence. It offers a better quality of life by reducing travel and making it easier to integrate treatment into daily life.3
Two types of dialysis can be performed at home: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, each offering advantages and specific features tailored to the patient's needs.
Home hemodialysis
Home hemodialysis is based on the same principle as in-center hemodialysis, with one modality being performed more frequently and in shorter sessions, usually 5 to 6 times a week. This increased frequency allows for more regular toxin removal and reduces sudden fluctuations in blood volume.3
Benefits (of frequent hemodialysis)3 :
- Better treatment tolerance: Reduction in the risk of hypotension and cramps.
- Autonomy and flexibility: The possibility to adjust sessions according to the patient's lifestyle.
- Fewer dietary and fluid restrictions: More frequent removal of toxins allows for a more varied diet.
- Positive impact on cardiovascular health: Reduction in cardiac stress and better regulation of blood pressure.
Drawbacks9 :
- Training and learning Training in a center is required to ensure safe care management.
- Home setup: Requires suitable space and minimal infrastructure.
Peritoneal dialysis
This type of dialysis uses the peritoneum, a natural membrane in the abdomen, as a filter to remove toxins and excess fluids from the body. It can be performed continuously during the day (CAPD) or at night with an automatic cycler (APD).20

Benefits21 :
- Gentle therapy: No extracorporeal blood circulation, which reduces the risk of hypotension.
- Home support: For patients who are not fully independent, a private nurse can be called to perform the connection.
- Increased flexibility: With nocturnal APD, dialysis is done at night, freeing up the day for other activities.
Drawbacks9 :
- Infectious risk: Strict hygiene is essential to prevent peritoneal infections.
- Less suitable for certain profiles: Particularly for those who have undergone multiple abdominal surgeries.
Appropriate medical support
Specific training and rigorous medical follow-up are implemented to ensure a safe transition to home dialysis. Patients receive personalized support to tailor their treatment to their lifestyle.
The choice between the different forms of dialysis should be made in consultation with the medical team, taking into account the patient's preferences and personal constraints.
Home dialysis represents a major advancement in the management of chronic kidney disease, allowing patients to balance treatment with an optimal quality of life.
