A question, a problem ?

We are here to provide you with all the useful information about kidney failure.

What is chronic kidney disease?

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function. The kidneys can no longer effectively filter toxins and excess water from the blood, which can lead to serious complications.

What are the main causes of kidney failure?

The most common causes are diabetes and high blood pressure. Other causes include hereditary kidney diseases, kidney infections, autoimmune diseases, and drug-induced toxicities.

What are the symptoms of kidney failure?

Symptoms may be subtle at first but often include fatigue, insomnia, nausea, loss of appetite, itching, shortness of breath, edema, and high blood pressure.

What are the possible treatments for kidney failure?

The main options are: • Kidney transplantation • In-center dialysis • Home dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) • Conservative care (palliative).

What is home hemodialysis?

Home hemodialysis is a dialysis technique that allows patients to perform their sessions at home using a compact dialysis monitor. The principle of hemodialysis is based on extracorporeal blood circulation, where the blood is filtered through a dialyzer before being reinfused into the body.

What are the benefits of home hemodialysis?

Regained independence: With training, the patient can perform their treatment independently and does not need to go to the center multiple times a week. Improved quality of life: More frequent and shorter sessions, better tolerated by the body. Increased flexibility: The patient can organize their sessions according to their schedule and lifestyle, making it easier to continue professional and social activities. Better symptom control: Improved overall well-being and reduced cardiovascular complications.

How long does a home hemodialysis session last?

The duration of sessions ranges between 2 and 2.5 hours, several times a week (typically 5 to 6 sessions per week), which is closer to the natural functioning of the kidneys.

Who can benefit from home hemodialysis?

Patients must: Be motivated and independent. Have a suitable space at home for the equipment. Be medically eligible after evaluation by their nephrologist.

What training is required before starting home hemodialysis?

Training in a dialysis center is mandatory for several weeks (typically 5 to 6 weeks). It allows the patient (and their caregiver, if necessary) to learn how to use the equipment, manage connections, monitor parameters, and respond in case of issues.
